Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
